From Civ VII to a Drunk Greek Queen

I hesitated to get Civilization VII because I did not like some of the changes they made. But with a recent sale, we decided to buy one copy of the game and use Family Sharing. Between my husband and me, it was rather cheap to get then. This happened when we were visiting family, so I couldn’t play the game because my laptop doesn’t have enough power for games like that. And when we returned, I had already forgotten about it.

Now I finally checked out the game, played a bit, and did not dislike it! It feels enough like Civilization to give me that sense of familiarity. I know and understand the basics, but some things are also different. Are the hostile units like barbarians? Or did they get rid of the barbarians and combined City-States with barbarians to create these new nuisances?

Either way, something happened that always happens when I play such a game… I closed it and opened Old World. On the one hand, I just really do love Old World. But I think another reason is that it just feels familiar and cozy by now. And, of course, exciting! The game has random events and that is something you just cannot prepare for. In my current run, I lost two of my three children, but fortunately, I already had a grandchild. So all is well! And then my long reign was celebrated and I invited the Greek queen with her husband. As she was drunk, she wagered one of her cities and lost the bet. Now my kingdom is bigger than before. Plus, a random affair led to another child, which means my lineage is definitely secure (I like legitimizing all children).

Back to Civ VII, though: I will jump into the game every now and then, play a few turns, and maybe read up on what those hostile units are all about and how to best deal with them. And I will definitely restart my current game, because I made a few mistakes and it is just more fun to restart and notice how much smoother the beginning is once you actually know what you are doing.
