Play your cards strategically and push your engine to the limit in HEAT: Pedal to the Metal, an official digital adaptation of the award-winning board game. The developers emailed GamingOnLinux to note it will have full Linux support.

So what exactly is it? Set in the golden age of 1960s motorsport, HEAT: Pedal to the Metal is a card-driven racing game designed by Asger Granerud and Daniel Pedersen, built around speed, timing and knowing how far to push your engine. Players strategically play cards to control their speed, master corners and compete against friends, Legends and players worldwide.

From the press release: “Two years ago, we came to SPIEL 2024 hoping to start a conversation about bringing HEAT to digital. Coming back this year with the game in development makes this SPIEL particularly special for us,” says Joško Mikuličić, CEO and co-founder of Mipmap Digital. “HEAT has such a distinctive identity, both visually and as a game, and we've worked closely with Days of Wonder to make sure that carries through to the digital adaptation.”

“We are delighted to collaborate with Mipmap; an exciting and iconic board game like HEAT deserves the best possible digital adaptation. We are confident that Mipmap, thanks to its experience and passion for HEAT, will transform it into the best possible digital experience for players, further enhancing the overall tabletop gameplay experience,” added Christian Dunn, Interactive Licensing Manager, asmodee.

The developer shared some more insight into the adaptation development:

"Mipmap Digital had HEAT: Pedal to the Metal in its sights long before development began. The Croatian studio specializes in bringing board games to digital platforms, and HEAT was a title the team particularly wanted to take on. They reached out to asmodee ahead of SPIEL Essen 2024, hoping to start a conversation about bringing the game to digital.

That conversation led to a meeting at SPIEL, where the team made their interest in the game clear. A year later, with the licensing agreement signed, work on the official digital adaptation began. The first months were spent away from anything players would eventually see on screen. The team mapped out the game's UX, worked through rules and edge cases with Days of Wonder, and established what HEAT should look and feel like in digital form.

Its visual identity was an obvious place to start. HEAT has a distinctive, slightly dusty and weathered art style, right down to the speckled texture running through its illustrations. Mipmap carried that character into the 3D world, using those same textures throughout the game's environments and recreating the original tracks as closely as possible.

Moving HEAT to digital also opened up new ways to present the game itself. Around a physical table, information is spread across cards, player boards, tokens and the track. On screen, it can be gathered and presented when it becomes relevant, while the camera can focus on the part of the race that matters most for the player's next decision.

That opportunity has also created one of the biggest challenges of the adaptation. A board game has an entire table at its disposal; the digital version needs to communicate the same depth of information clearly on anything from a desktop monitor to a phone. Finding that balance has shaped much of Mipmap's approach to HEAT: deciding what players need to see, when they need to see it, and how the game can help them keep their attention on the decisions that matter."
