Hideo Kojima has touched base on his company’s split with Sony for the upcoming stealth title Physint, revealing he doesn’t have any bad feelings against the format holder.
Speaking with IGN, Kojima-san admitted he doesn’t really recall much about the meeting that resulted in them backing away from the project, which ultimately lead to Kojima Productions going on to partner with Xbox. Bloomberg later claimed that Physint was in danger of running over budget and had missed numerous deadlines.
I don’t remember so much of that meeting, to be honest with you. And my colleagues probably don’t remember as well, so I can’t really answer if you ask me what exactly they said. But, from my side, I love Sony. And I don’t have any bad feelings against them because I know that it’s a tough time in the game industry. Nothing could’ve prepared me for their decision to step away from the project. So I thought, ‘What am I going to do from tomorrow?’
Kojima explained that Sony informed him they couldn’t fund development for Physint anymore, although despite the ongoing job losses and studio closures within the games industry, Kojima still figured, “Physint was OK, Physint was safe.”
I’ve been working with them for like 30 years… Mr. Ken Kutaragi, Mr. Hirai – I was close with them. But it’s not like that recently. I realised that, okay, this is the reality that they’re giving me. It’s the 10th anniversary of my studio. My studio might collapse, right?
Kojima Productions recently announced that Bill Skarsgard will be taking on the lead role in Physint, although the game itself is still in the early stages of production and won’t be out for years at this point.
